Detailed Guide: Places to Visit with One Day Coorg Local Sightseeing Tour with Talacauvery by Car
The following places will be covered as part of your one day Coorg local sightseeing tour with Talacauvery in a private cab:
Talacauvery is a destination of spiritual importance located at a distance of 44 KM from Madikeri, Coorg. Nestled in the Brahmagiri Hills, Talacauvery is the birthplace of the holy river Cauvery and is one of the most popular sightseeing places to see in Coorg. The place of origin has been marked by a small temple and holy water tank, or kundike. You will find devotees and tourists taking a dip in this holy tank before starting off their day.
The water of the tank is believed to relieve a person of his sins. The best time to visit Talacauvery is during the pious festival of Tala Sakarmana in October. This is a destination for Hindu devotees and photography enthusiasts.
Bhagamandala rests on the upstream stretches of the holy river Cauvery. Bhagamandala is home to Triveni Sangam which is the meeting place for the rivers of Cauvery, Kannike and the mythical river of Sujyoti. Triveni Sangam is an extremely revered place amongst devotees. Don’t be surprised to see people taking a dip, praying or even scattering the ashes of their deceased loved one.
The most important attraction of Bhagamandala is the Bhagandeshwara Temple. The temple was built in honour of Lord Shiva. The temple pulls in an astonishingly large crowd during Tula Sakarmana. When you go to Bhagamandala, keep some time aside to meditate, pray and feel at home with oneself.
3. Abbey Falls
Abbey Falls or Abbi Falls is one of the most significant waterfalls not only in Coorg but the entire Western Ghats! Located at a mere distance of 8 KM from Coorg, the small town of Coorg is synonymous with Abbey Falls. The falls marked the early reaches of Cauvery river. The falls were earlier known as Jessie Falls, in memory of a British officer’s wife.
To reach the falls, you will have to trek a short distance that will take you three stocky coffee bushes and aromatic spice plantations! A hanging bridge and a small balcony have been constructed for tourists to safely view the falls. End your visit here by sipping on some piping hot coffee at the stores nearby!
The majestic Omkareshwara Temple was built in the year 1820 by Linga Rajendra II. The temple was built by Lingarajendra II in hopes of atoning for his sin for wrongfully sentencing a pious Brahmin to death. The Gothic, Islamic and Hindu style of building has captured the attention of architecture lovers for centuries.
The temple is adorned with spectacular paintings, the mantapa installed with a dome, the panchaloha windows and the Shiva linga. The water tank in front of the temple is full of colourful fishes that are loved by children. The Mahamangalarthi is performed thrice a day and they should not be missed out on!
Madikeri Fort and Palace along with being the most important tourist spot in Madikeri is also a building that functions as government offices, Court and the district prison. Tipu Sultan rebuilt the fort in 1800s in granite. Originally the fort was built in mud by Mudduraja in the 17th century. Eventually, the fort was captured by the British in 1834.
The must-see attractions within the fort is the palace, Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, Maha Kote Ganesha temple, Clock Tower, Government Museum and the life-size statues of two elephants. There are also some viewpoints along the boundaries of Madikeri Fort.
The Old Anglican Church of the Madikeri Fort was converted into the Government Museum in the year 10970. The museum is a proud collector of several priceless antiques such coins, manuscripts, treasures of the Kodava royalty, bronze statues, wood sculptures, armaments and inscriptions. You can visit the museum every day from 9 AM to 7 PM, except on Mondays and public holidays.
Gaddige or Raja’s Tomb is a regal structure built on a hilltop in Madikeri. Imitating the Indo – Saracenic style of architecture, Gaddige is a cluster of royal tombs of the Kodavas of Coorg. The main tombs at Gaddige are that of Chikkavirarajendra, Rudrappa, Dodda Veerajendara and his queen.
The palace is located only a kilometre away from Madikeri bus stand. The beautiful garden surrounding Gaddige is a great place for relaxation and evening strolls! This site will be of special interest to history and architecture lovers.
8. Raja’s Seat
The tour will rightly conclude by a visit to Raja’s Seat. Raja’s Seat is the most spectacular, and probably the most love destination in Madikeri. The garden is situated on top of a hill that offers mindblowing of Coorg and nearby places. Raja’s Seat was a destination of choice for the Kodava kings who would watch the sunsets here every evening.
Today tourist flock in hundreds to Raja’s Seat to catch a glimpse of the setting sun. The area has been developed into a beautiful garden with flower sculptures, flowering plants, musical fountains and benches. The viewpoint offers unobstructed views of the forests, misty hills and the descending fog.
